This time I would like to present one of the organizers of the 8th European Workshop Biotechnology of Microalgae.

The Institut für Getreideverarbeitung GmbH (Institute For Cereal Processing) was founded in 1960 as practice-oriented research institute for milling, baking and food industry. In 1990, the institute was converted into a limited liability company, the privatization by three employees of many years as partners was carried out in 1994.Industry-related technological and technical research, the development of plants and products, and services for food industry are key issues of the business activities. The experiences and competence of more than 100 scientific and technical staff members in connection with high-grade technical equipment are the basis of the extensive services:Applied research and development for agricultural and food industry, pharmacy, cosmetics, and environmental protection Customized problem solutions National and international technology transfer Training and education Analyses of raw materials and products in an accredited test laboratory Efficient innovations are implemented by biotechnological processes, modern techniques, and by the use of regrowing raw materials for technical applications. The research competence is supplemented by the active integration into regional and national research networks and the cooperation with German and international research institutions.Biotechnology DivisionThe range of services offered by the Biotechnology Division is based on nearly 30 years of experience in research and development for the cultivation of phototropic micro-organisms. The staffs – natural scientists, constructors, technicians, technologists and technical personnel – have extensive and well-founded knowledge of the development of procedures and installations, the research and analysis of active substances and of product design. Excellent, world-wide contacts to biomass producers, food producers, to the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industry provide the fundament for innovative, market-oriented developments.  Thanks to the wide varieties of high-quality components, combined with new research results which document the health-benefiting effects of algae production, new areas of application, above all in the fields of food supplements, functional foods, dietetics, cosmetics and pharmacy, are becoming increasingly important.A growth in the significance of micro-algae biotechnology has been apparent world-wide for approximately five years; the emphasis of this lies in the production of valuable substances from micro-algae and their use in areas of relevance for the environment. In the focus of the public are biofuels from microalgae. The IGV GmbH works on this field for many years. In this respect, the main areas of activity of the Division have been defined as follows:

  1. Technical- technological developments New and further development of photo bioreactor technology Drying technologies, Extraction techniques and technologies Integrated systems for the production and application of micro-algae Development of new concepts for biomass separation
  2. Active substances from algae Screening for relevant active substances for pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications Characteristics of active substances Formulation of active substances Procedures for the isolation of active substances
  3. Bio energy from algae.
